40'th Jubilee Cracow School
of Theoretical Physics
Quantum Phase Transitions
in High Energy and Condensed Matter Physics
June 3-11, 2000 --- Zakopane, Poland
SCHOOL BULLETIN No.

About the school
The Cracow School of Theoretical Physics has been organized
yearly
since
1961. Its topics cover various aspects of theoretical high-energy
physics and lately of condensed matter theory.
Reviews of experimental results are usually also
presented.
Several pedagogical lectures, aimed at graduate students and
young
postgraduates who work in the particular field, are always arranged.
This year a
Kindergarden in Physics,
will be held for talented senior-high schools students.
The written version of the lectures is published in the school
proceedings
by Acta Physica Polonica B at the end of this year. The
deadline
for manuscript submission is September 30, 2000.
The title of the XLth course of the School held in Zakopane
this year is
Quantum Phase Transitions in High Energy and Condensed
Matter Physics.
The list of invited
lecturers is included below. (For the titles of their presentations
see our WWW page http://th-www.if.uj.edu.pl/school/lectures.html.)
Lecture sessions will be arranged in the morning and the evening.
Afternoons
will be free for discussions. Some of the evening sessions will be
allocated for short presentations by younger participants of the
School.

About the place
Zakopane is a popular summer and winter resort in Southern
Poland, 100
km south from Krakow. The Tatra Mountains, a range of Alpine
character
with peaks 2000-2600m high, surrounding Zakopane provide
excellent walking and hiking opportunities. Zakopane is also known
for
one of the most interesting of Polish theatres and some good art
galleries.
Krakow, the former capital of Poland is a unique city on the
European
scale.
Its architectural monuments ranging through romanesque, gothic,
baroque
and renaissance styles containing the imposing fortification of the
Wawel Castle, several tens of churches and many other historic
edifices are
most remarkable. The layout of the City with the immense area of
the Main Market Square dating to its location in 13th century is
exceptional as well.
Krakow is also one of the most important centres of Polish
intellectual
and artistic life. Its Jagellonian University was founded in 1364.
Krakow hosts a great number of active art galleries, theaters,
orchestras and choirs and many international art and music
festivals
take place here. To stress its role in the European cultural life,
the European-Community authorities have chosen Krakow as
one of nine cultural capitals of Europe in the year 2000.
Also, this year our University cellebrates its 600-th Anniversary
of the Renovation Act.
One day during the School will be free, in order to allow the
participants
to take a longer hike in the Tatra mountains or to visit Krakow
or neighbouring Wieliczka, where a medieval salt mine is located.
Accommodation and fee
The participants will be lodged in the "Jaskolka" hotel.
The lecture hall, the restaurant and the reception desk will be
there as well. The hotel
is located a short distance from the centre of the town. Its
address:
Osrodek Wypoczynkowy Jaskolka
34-500 Zakopane, Piaseckiego 16.
Some participants may be also lodged in one of the hotels in
the neighbourhood of the "Jaskolka" hotel.
The accommodation will be mainly in double rooms, however,
restricted amount
of single rooms is available upon request (the invited lecturers will
be
accomodated in single rooms).
The cost of the School including accommodation with full board
(breakfast, lunch, dinner), all other activities during the School
and the proceedings
is 500 US dollars or equivalent in other currency. The cost per
accompanying person is 400 US dollars. Additional charge for
single room
accommodation is 100 US dollars.
The School fee is to be paid at the registration desk upon arrival
in the hotel.
Travel
There is a large number of flights from various European airports
to the Krakow Airport and they provide the most convenient
way to get to Krakow. Otherwise, one can fly to Warszawa and take
an
express train to Krakow afterwards. It takes 2 hours 40' to get from
Warszawa to Krakow, however, it can take almost as
much time to get from the Warszawa Airport to the railway station,
especially during rush hours, so the travel can become long this
way.
Coach transportation will be organized to take the participants from
Krakow directly to the hotel in Zakopane on 2nd June
in the evening (around 6:00 PM).
Visas
Participants requiring a visa to enter Poland should apply for it well
in advance.
Application procedure and deadlines
People interested in participating are kindly asked to
