New Vista of Shell Structure in Neutron-Rich Exotic Nuclei

H. Grawe

The origin of new shell structure observed in neutron-rich light nuclei and implications for medium-heavy nuclei are discussed in terms of the monopole part of the in-medium NN interaction. The evolution of the harmonic oscillator (HO) closed shells N=8, 20, 40 via shell gap quenching towards Nm-2N, with N numbering HO quanta, is compared to recent experimental data. The locality of the monopole driven shell change and the fading of its shell quenching power beyond N=50 is discussed.
