Temperature dependence of specific heat as well as magnetization reveals that Dy0.8Gd0.2B2C2 undergoes an antiferroquadrupolar transition at TQ=17.5 K below an antiferromagnetic one at TN=20.0 K. Gd substitution in DyB2C2 decreases TQ and increases TN, and results in a transition sequence reverse to that in DyB2C2. The magnetization increases below TN and decreases below TQ. The results are discussed as a manifestation of anomalous properties of the magnetic phase adjacent to the antiferroquadrupolar ordered phase.
