Status of the OPERA Long Baseline Experiment

OPERA (Oscillation Project with Emulsion tRacking Apparatus) is an international collaboration (Europe–Asia) aiming to give the first direct proof of \nu _\tau appearance in a pure \nu _\mu beam, in order to validate the \nu _\mu \rightarrow \nu _\tau atmospheric oscillation hypothesis. OPERA has already obtained good results with electronic detectors during the first CNGS run in August 2006, and neutrino interactions have been observed in OPERA-like target with the PEANUT test beam at Fermilab in 2005.
